Captain Photo Opportunity

The captain posed for his obligatory photo session. For sanitary reasons, there was no shaking of hands. I held out my fist for a fist bump, with no response. Oh, well. There is an official photographer, so the ship can sell you the photo, but Linda took this from the side.

Captain Frank Martinsen, like so many captains, is Scandinavian. His biography is a bit different, in that he didn't start out as captain of a freighter or fishing vessel. At age 17 he left his native Norway to work on a Royal Caribbean ship as a deckhand. Later, he left to attend the Norwegian Merchant Marine Academy, returning to Royal Caribbean in 1991 as Second Officer. He then worked his way up to Staff Captain and fnally Captain. This is the seventh ship which he has served as captain. Captains generally work for ten weeks and then have ten weeks off. During the working period, there are no days off.
